Responsible gambling

The long bet has its own risks

Season betting feels safer than in-play punting because it is slow. Some of its risks are exactly the slow kind, and worth naming plainly.

What is specific to season-long betting

Three patterns to watch. First, the locked stake: your money is gone from your account for nine months, which makes it easy to mentally spend twice. Count an open outright as money already spent, not money you have. Second, chasing the position: when a title ticket dies in October, the temptation is to “rescue” it with weekly bets on the same team. That is chasing losses with extra steps. Third, the portfolio illusion: holding ten small outrights feels diversified, but ten positions is ten stakes, and the total is the number that matters.

The basics, always

Only bet what you can afford to lose without it changing anything about your month. Set deposit limits at the bookmaker, and use them at every book you hold an account with. Never bet to recover a loss. Never borrow to bet. If betting has stopped being entertainment and started being a need, that is the signal, and it deserves a response, not a shrug.
